Aies Grieve is the artistic moniker of experimental producer and writer, Angel Fikunayomi, an alias that arose in response to the little deaths’ we witness and experience daily as a result of our material reality under white supremacy. As an artist, I am constantly exploring the dichotomy of sound as a tool and as a weapon, the separation and converge between them – its ability to comfort, demoralize, heal, repel, trigger, control, liberate, distort truth, instil fear, incite violence.
Collected ‘sonic artefacts’ underpin each work, like ripped up photographs scattered throughout – fragments of a life and world, lived or to come.
The work ranges from melodic to discordant, samples are manipulated and sounds synthesised, mirroring the dominant culture and conceptualizing new realities simultaneously.
Worship music, ritual, faith and devotion are the foundations of my practice and a bridge between my understanding of the material and metaphysical – how they are connected by sound.
Blending afropessimistic metal and grunge, black ambient noise and electronica, I aspire to unearth the world-building potential of sound.
